What is bushing?

The bushing is a cylindrical component designed to support the load on the shaft, which operates through sliding motion between moving surfaces. The bushing is a single element assembly, although it may consist of several different materials. Also known as sleeve bearing, the bushing slides on the rod or shaft to provide extremely low friction movement, provide excellent shock absorption and work, and minimize energy use, noise and wear. The two main types of bushings include sleeve and flange bushings. When flanges are designed, they can handle combined loads. The bushing can be threaded on the internal or external surface to adapt to various assembly conditions. In addition to different types, bushings with different material compositions are also available. The material composition of the bushing helps it withstand various conditions in the operating environment, such as corrosion, high temperature, high pressure and impact.
(1) , bronze and metal bushing
The bronze bushing is usually made of continuous casting bronze material to ensure uniform structure. They are universal bushings with excellent bearing and wear protection, and can withstand high temperatures (up to 450 ° F). Metal bushings can also be made of various metals or alloys to enhance their performance, including steel or stainless steel, brass, aluminum and copper.
(2) , plastic bushing
Solid plastic bushing is very popular because of its light weight and corrosion resistance. Modern plastics can overcome previous problems, such as thermal sensitivity, softening, wear or shortening life at high temperatures. They are ideal for wet or humid environments, such as dry kiln wheels in wood drying facilities, where water acts as a lubricant for bushings. Although very popular, plastic is not recommended as a bushing material for heavy loads. It is easy to crack under high load. If the manufacturing or assembly is not accurate, especially when using ready-made bushings, misalignment is very common. When specifying plastics, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the preferred engineering plastic material.
